Dust Mites

  • Dust mites cause allergy suffering in millions of

    Dust mite (CSIRO)

    people.

  • These allergies include restricted breathing, poorsleep, asthma, allergic rhinitis and more problems.
  • Many dust mites live in our bedding, feed on skin cells, defecate and decay.
  • They are difficult to control without a solid barrier between you and your mattress and pillows.
  • A bed cover made of protective non-woven barrier is a sure way to control dust mites and bed bugs. Woven material struggles to provides this barrier.

More detail

  • Free From Worries bedding covers are all made of Non Woven Fabric (polypropylene or polyurethane). This provides a physical barrier against dust mites, bed bugs, their eggs and feces.
  • I used to think that a tightly woven cotton cover would be a nicer product. Unfortunately with use and wasing, woven products can loosen and allow the tiny dust mites through. They are also considerably more expensive.
  • The Dust Mite barrier eliminates dust mites. Many other products specify being ‘dust mite Resistant’, or ‘dust mite free’; terms that do not guarantee a dust mite proof barrier.
  • A barrier of unwoven polypropylene or polyurethane is a sure way to eliminate dust mites from your bedding.
  • Those dust mites already in your bedding will quickly die and disappear. Their allergens cannot reach you through the barrier. All your normal bedding material that cover the dust mite barriers, can be washed regularly (in at least 60oC), to remove any new dust mite inhabitants.

  • Free From Worries fabric is breathable, lasts wash after easy wash and dries very quickly.
  • The Terry Cotton topped product particularly, is rustle-free, soft and comfortable, with no “plastic” feeling.
  • No need for chemical dust mite sprays to control dust mites and bed bugs.
  • Wash and dry before first use.

What are Dust Mites and Bed Bugs?

Dust mites (Photo by Gilles San Martin)

Dust mites cause millions of people to suffer from allergic reactions. Also know as house dust mites, they are very common around the home, particularly in our mattresses,  sheets, pillows, and carpets. They are microscopic pests; so tiny that they live and move easy throughout the contents and weave of bedding material as they breed, defecate, die and decay.

Our beds are an ideal environment for dust mites because they thrive in the warm, humid environments provided by our own body warmth. They feed on our dead skin cells, much of which we shed while sleeping. The main cause of allergic reactions is their feces and the debris from their dead bodies. A fungus grows on the feces and dead bodies, which contributes to our allergic reactions. Dust mite body size ranges between 200-300μm (=0.2-0.3 mm), their feces are 10 – 40μm (=0.010 – 0.04mm). We can’t see them, but they are numerous within our home material.

Bed bugs are a different and larger pest at 1 to 5mm in body size, eggs at 0.8mm and feces at 0.7mm. They are large enough to be seen with the naked eye. Bed bugs bite the skin and feed on your blood and are also a significant cause of allergic reactions. They can leave a rash or bite marks that may result in allergic reactions or infection. Because they are much larger than dust mites, when you control dust mites, you also control bed bugs.

Dust Mite Allergy Symptoms

  • Sneezing and hay fever like symptoms
  • Allergic Rhinitis (slight to severe irritation and swelling at the back of the nose)
  • Asthma
  • Dermatitis, eczema, itchy skin, rashes
  • Coughing, tight chest, wheezing, or shortness of breath
  • Inflamed sinuses and headaches
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Poor and broken sleep resulting in fatigue, depression, poor concentration and learning ability

How to Get Rid of Dust Mites – Tips

  • Encase all bedding in dust and allergen-proof material
  • Wash all sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases weekly-fortnightly at minimum 140°F/60°C to kill and remove dust mites and bed bugs
  • Vacuum carpets, curtains and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth weekly-fortnightly
  • Soft toys can be frozen overnight,  hot tumble dried, hot washed (140°F/60°C) or washed with eucalyptus oil.
